RESIDENTIAL GEOTHERMAL SYSTEMS: Heating And Cooling Using The Ground Below
NEW EXPANDED EDITION with color illustrations and spacious 8.5 x 8.5 format adds detailed descriptions of the components of the heat pump, open loops systems and important decisions that the homeowner must make.
Interest in residential geothermal systems has grown as more people realize they can replace their fossil-fuel heating system with one that is three to five times more efficient and doesn't require a chimney to exhaust noxious fumes. Currently in the USA there is a federal 30% tax credit that applies to the total installation cost. These newer, safer systems provide heating as well as cooling simply by transferring heat between the home and the ground or a nearby body of water. Since this is a relatively new technology, the number of experienced installers is limited, but growing. Therefore, there is a burden on homeowners interested in installing one of these systems to absorb as much information about residential geothermal systems as possible. This book was written specifically to meet that need as well as to help HVAC professionals who are new to residential geothermal systems.
Customer Review
As a Licensed Professional Engineer, the book "RESIDENTIAL GEOTHERMAL SYSTEMS: Heating And Cooling Using The Ground" is well illustrated and answers most any question a person could ask in regard to Geothermal installations. Of course the nature of the area available for instillation will have the most influence on installation costs and system efficiency.
This was one of two books on Geothermal Heating & Cooling ordered through Amazon with expedited shipping because my current system was out of order. Very fortunately, they arrived 24 hours before the contractor arrived to start making measurements . The two books saved me a fortune, because the contractor had low balled his verbal estimate to two-thirds of the real cost. When challenged by the two books in front of him, the price estimate tripled. Needless to say, other arrangements have been made. |

First and Foremost I'm sold on Geothermal Ground-Water source cooling that Mr. Egg covers in both of his books. As a Civil Engineer and Builder I've seen many systems come and go. The systems described in this book are simple, logical and long lasting. Geothermal water-source cooling is a logical and green alternative to air cooled split-systems and cooling towers. In our Florida environment, cooling towers expel $100k in water a year and split systems don't last. We have 75 degree ground water in Tampa year round, which is better performance than a cooling tower on a hot summer day. Glad to see the "HOW TO", Enjoy the book.

International Fuel Gas Code 2006
Book Description
Publication Date: March 6, 2006
Addresses the design and installation of fuel gas systems and gas-fired appliances through requirements that emphasize performance.
Customer Reviews
By Ross
I've been in the plumbing construction business for over 15 years. The plumbing code book and gas-fitters code book read like a set of instructions rather than a user friendly guide. It's like reading a play by Shakespeare; you have to actually see the play or look at cliff notes to thoroughly understand its real meaning. There are so many references to other code books and vague inferences in the chapters that make it frustrating to the plumber who really wants to grasp the engineering principles and not just pass the test and get a card. Experience is just as important as book knowledge. That is hard to come by in the construction business. There may be some good plumbers but there are very few good leaders. Usually one learns from their mistakes. The lack of understanding and substandard installation in plumbing can only lead to property damage and embarrassment. However, when installing gas piping and fixtures a poor installation could cause death.
By James Hays
This is exactly what is required by several states to assist with the master’s exams and continuing education classes, for master gas fitters licenses.

By Paul D. Seward
This is a fascinating account of the use and installation of mechanical systems integrated within buildings. Although the chapters seemed to be disoriented with one and another, the level of detail is comparable to a James Michener novel. I never really understood the plot line, and the tempo was slow at best, but this is bound to be a classic, read and re-read by thousands of building officials across the USA. Enjoy!
By I. Rachal
Product arrived quickly and in perfect condition. This is the original IMC adopted by many cities across the USA. I wish Amazon would link the International Energy Code book so both could be purchased at the same time at a discount.

No Ducks in the Attic: & Other Basics of HVAC Installation
Book Description
Publication Date: April 14, 2009
No Ducks in the Attic is a fun and easy look at residential HVAC installations. Professionals in the industry are often taught theory in the classroom, and the "just do it this way" method in the field without knowing how or why. From the owner of the company, right down to the newest apprentice, all can learn how to properly install a system, create a happy customer, and be profitable without the pitfalls of trial and error mechanics. No Ducks in the Attic discusses the dos and don’ts of load calculations, duct design, equipment specs, condensate problems, electrical basics, and other subjects to fill in the gaps that others assume you know. Especially good for those who aren't "big readers".
Customer Review
This book covers some good basics and some good business practices. A little on duct selection and hardware. It does not cover any duct/room load data or how to calculate CFMs per room a must for any new or update install. It does have many good points and facts and would make a great addition to a collection on this topic.

Detailed illustrations, tables, and essential HVAC equations are also included. This comprehensive guide contains everything you need to design, operate, and maintain peak-performing HVAC systems.
Customer Review
The book is just okay in my opinion. For it to be a systems design book, there are no basic illustrations of systems. For example, there are no pictures of an all air system, all water system, air water system... They do however, cover the components that are in these systems, but I feel that they should show illustrations of the full systems. I also like the way that they have all of the formulas in the beginning chapter of the book in one easy to find location.

Black & Decker Codes for Homeowners: Electrical Codes, Mechanical Codes, Plumbing Codes, Building Codes
Book Description
Publication Date: September 1, 2010
Codes are a fact of life for do-it-yourselfers, but getting good information on codes can be a nightmare. Anyone who has ever opened a code book (or even a code interpretation book) looking for the answer to a building, wiring or plumbing question has found the same thing: a lot of arcane, technical words and cross-referencing, pages of meaningless charts, but no information that make sense. Codes for Homeowners combines decades of experience by author and IRC-certified home inspector Bruce Barker with Creative Publishing’s famous studio photography, and the result is the first truly clear and easy to use codes reference book for homeowners and tradesmen alike. Current with 2009 International Residential Code (IRC).
Customer Review
I have a very old house and find myself crossing over all areas of maintenance. I am not a professional electrician, plumber or contractor; but I am confident in my skills and comfortable with taking on most tasks. Having a multi-subject guidebook to check the codes and proper configurations is indispensable. Swapping out a 40-60 year old 3-way light outlet, and all the switches, to a 4-way configuration is not something I do every day. This book provides great guidance and excellent drawings of every configuration I needed in my home.

Customer Review
I am a journeyman plumber. I'm 24 years old and have not read the entire book yet. I probably haven't even read half of it. But I love this book! I probably would have paid a hundred dollars for it. It’s not a book for the home owner to reference to without any knowledge of what he is doing! If your a homeowner and don't mind getting your hands dirty and will read the book, you will probably know more than the service man if you would have called one. It’s very detailed and covers a range of things and makes and models. So it's very hard to just open the book and learn just about your own model. You have to learn them all and the principles of it all. Which makes it great for someone in the field of repair/service.

It does contain some helpful ASHRAE tables, but it is not very practical. It is a theoretical explanation of HVAC engineering principles rather than a practical HVAC design guide. If you want a theoretical book, then this is a good one.

Customer Review
I recommend this book to anyone who needs to be kept up to date
on code changes. The drawings and other illustrations make this
a helpful resource to those working in the HVAC, Gas, and, or plumbing
trades. It would be nice if the individual code books were put together like this. I wouldn't care if the code books had to be larger to do that.
