Milwaukee 6509-22 Saw-zall 11-Amp Reciprocating Saw

Customer Review

It cuts metal, wood, plastic, plumbing, wood with nails, sheetrock, things buried in the ground. It's simply amazing.
Want to take out a wall with the smallest mess possible? Slip the blade between the studs and cut the nails. Slip the blade between the top plate and cut the nails. Boom, the wall will now push out of the opening with all the plaster or drywall intact (and without all the dust you get from hammering drywall out of the way).
Any of Milwaukee brand Saw-zall that has a counterweighted motor (this is important for controlling vibration and being able to cut one handed) is a joy to use.
After I bought one, I wondered how I ever managed to work without one.

Honeywell HM509H8908 TrueSTEAM 9-Gallon Humidifier

Customer Review
This humidifier really beats the typical cold water units. We had an Aprilaire cold water unit attached to our furnace, and it just didn't keep our house humid. We barely were able to get up to 30% in the cold of water. But the steam unit from Honeywell got us up closer to 50%, even when it was frigid outside.

Basement fresh air intake making basement cold.
Well, you are probably talking about the combustion air intake. There are at least two ways on how to reduce it that I know of. First of them, you can find on this page. A second one you may use special motorized dampers manufactured by Hoyme.

How to Stop Cold Air from Fresh Air (Combustion Air) Vent in Furnace Room

For years, I've heard about these issues related to the combustion air intakes, but never faced it myself before. However, recently I install one in my house and now I joined a legion of people who are trying to resolve this inconvenience once and for all!

At first as many of you, I've searched the web and all the solutions that I found there were just laughable:

1. Drop the pipe down into an empty 5-gallon bucket.
It doesn't work. You can try it at home just as I did - the result is obvious!...

Best place to put a furnace.
The best place to put a furnace is in the middle of your basement, but it is not always practical especially if you want you basement finished.

Can a dirty filter cause the black around my heating vents?
Yes.

Can a gas line touch a furnace duct?
Yes.

Can a heat vent be placed right above the cold air return vent?
Here is a free study for this topic on this page.

Can cold air return be installed vertically?
No, and it doesn't make sense anyway.

Can exhaust vents for two stages heating be place near a window?
Yes, but you have to read the installation manual. For example, Carrier allows you to install it 1' from an operational window, but Reem 4'.

Can forced air system be made quieter?
Systems with variable speed motors are very quiet.

Can I add a PVC vent to my cold air return for outside air?
You can add whatever you want; after all it’s your house.

Can I cut a cold air return on the lower part of my return to my furnace?
I do not think that code addresses high efficiency furnaces, but for 80% efficiency and lower, it must be at least 10' away.

Can I drain my furnace in the crawlspace?
No, you should use a condensate pump, route the tubing in the crawlspace, drill a hole in the sewage PVC pipe, stick the tubing in it, seal with silicone and fasten it with the electrical black tape.

Can I get ill from a furnace vent?
If it's back drafting then yes.

Can I install mini split system 3 foot off floor?
Yes.

Can I move a cold air return in my dinning room without hurting my furnace?
Yes you can, but turn the furnace off first.

Can I put metal screen in my air vents in the floor?
Yes, you can.

Can I use galvanized 6" duct pipe from stove to chimney?
If the installation manual allows it, then why not?

Can I use rectangular duct if a range hood calls for 8 inch round?
Yes, but it must be at least 14" x 3 ¼”.

Can the furnace run with the condensate pump shut off?
If you are asking about a condensing furnace, then no.

Can the hole in your cold air return be too small?
Yes.

Can the ticking noise come from inside the gas pipes?
No. BTW, I have never heard gas pipe ticking.

Can two furnaces utilize same ductwork?
Yes, they name it twined furnaces.

Can you cut a cold air return in basement on plenum?
If you have one then why not?

Can you cut in to the side of the plenum to install a vent?
Yes.

Can you open or close fireplace outside air intake?
Usually this kind of air intakes does not have dampers.

Can you plug your cold air return in the winter in Colorado?
You are probably referring to the fresh air intake. You can plug it if you do not use your bath fans and kitchen exhaust.

Can you put a cabinet over an air return kitchen?
No, because there are not suppose to be any cold air returns in the kitchen. However, if there is you should move it on another side of the wall or to another wall.

Can you use flexible gas duct for furnace exhaust?
Yes. Get more info in Chapter #49 of my Ductwork Installation Guide book.

Well, I think this is the brightest idea from the invention of the sliced bread! Any time you come back home you will know what your wife is cooking!

Clothes dryer hooked up to wood furnace.
I think this is a wonderful idea! You will supply preheated air with lint in it right to the burner chamber and save! However, please keep it a secret.

Connect bathroom fan to furnace vent.

I think that this one is also a bright idea! This way you will mix your stink with the carbon monoxide one and as a result everyone in your neighborhood would think that you are an alien from another planet!

Well, it is not actually removing it. It just reduces the RH.

Do I need to keep ac ductwork short in length?
Yes, but make sure not to kink insulated flex if you are using it for your project.

Do you have to vent gas furnace at floor and ceiling?
I assume that your question is about combustion air intake. Yes, in code they require combustion air intakes in 12" off the floor and ceiling. However, most of the inspectors understand that this is BS, and for residential they allow you to have only one 12" off the floor.

Do you need cold air returns with a down draft electric furnace with a heat pump?
Yes.

Do you need to put a heat register in the kitchen?
Absolutely, if you want to now how, please visit this page.

Does a draft inducer motor supply and exhaust air at the same time?
Yes.

Does a furnace cold air return duct have to be ducted to the heated air space of a home?
Yes.

Does adding a cold air return help with a cold basement?
Yes, it does, but adding a heat run is a must.

Does cold air venting make your old furnace more efficient?
Yes.

Does my crawlspace have to be vented if there is a gas furnace?
No, but if there is an 80% efficiency furnace you should provide combustion air intake.

Does the draft inducer motor get air from your basement or the outside of the house for combustion air?
For most of the high efficiency furnaces, it gets a combustion air from outside, for some of the high efficiency furnaces and 80% and lower it takes air from inside of your house.

Does the exhaust pipe from a gas furnace in an attic need to be connected to a duct, or is it okay if the exhaust just goes into the attic?
Not sure what you are asking, but it is not okay to exhaust into the attic.

Down flow furnace, now floors are cold how can I heat the floors?
If your house sits on the crawlspace, seal it 100% and cut in a couple of 10" x 4" supply registers.

Noisy Forced A/C and Heating Systems

We all know how noisy forced air cooling/heating systems can be. These noises can come from the grilles, the ducts, and from the fan. Our perception of noise is affected by both the frequency and the level of the sound. Higher frequency sounds (the sounds generated by high discharge velocities at grilles) are more offensive than lower frequency sounds (the sounds generated by the fan). For grilles there is a Noise Criteria (NC) rating that mimics the human perception of sound. The NC for a particular grille increases as more air is forced through it...

Duct sealing technology, which seals the ducts from the inside with a latex-based spray -- will soon be commercially available.

I got this question from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: How to steal electric using a contactor?
Well, I'm not an electrician, so I do not know the answer to this question and I'm not sure if I want to know...

I live in a home with vaulted ceilings in the main living area. it’s a great room concept. All the heat run to far wall floor registers. A lot of windows on that wall as it’s an outside wall. The rest of the room gets cold because all the heat goes straight up. The room stays cold. I want to add a run on the other side of the room (interior wall) but I am afraid the same thing will happen. Any ideas to spread the warmth through the room?

Install low cold air return.

I removed all dampers in ducts in my attic will there be a problem?
Well, I think it would be better to ask this question before you did something to your system, but not after. The good news is: now you are going to see for yourself if there is a problem or not.

It is a supply duct that is connected to the furnace.
1) What is inside the pipe (which is about 8-10 inches diameter)? I think it might be rattling because my new furnace fan is much more powerful than my old one, but I can't be sure the thing stuck inside is causing the rattling until I get my hands on it.
2) Should I remove what is inside the pipe?
3) How can I do that? I was thinking of cutting open the drywall and the pipe and patching it back up.

It is a single stem mount damper, every pipe should have one and usually does so the system can be balanced. It looks wide open and I would leave it alone. They can rattle and there is a handle on it which usually has a nut you can turn it a bit and tighten to stop that.

I want to add an Aprilaire 700 to my Trane XR95 furnace that has a cased A-Coil.
The only place on the supply duct big enough to put the 700 (or any other humidifier) is on the side of the cased A-coil. The dimensions are fine and it looks like there would not be any interference.

If a furnace is installed in a closet how big should the pipe be to bring outside air in for combustion?
6".

If I cut off my furnace at the thermostat, does it stop a potential gas leak?
No.

If your blower wheel is off balance is it bad for your furnace?
Yes.

    eBay
Honeywell HM512DG115

Customer Review
I originally purchased a different whole house humidifier but I found out that there just wasn't enough room on the furnace to mount it. I did more research and found the TrueSteam humidifier could be mounted up to 10 feet away from the furnace (20 feet with optional accessory) so I went with the largest unit (the 12 gallon) with the true IAQ control. It included everything needed to set up the humidifier, including a very nice thermostat/humidistat unit.

The humidifier itself was fairly easy to set up. As they say, you only have to drill a hole into the supply side of the furnace. Tapping into the water line was easy. Switching out the thermostat was not too bad but it did require running a new set of wires which ended up being the most difficult part of the process.

I have gone through a whole winter season now. The new thermostat allows for fine tuning the humidity to your house to prevent condensation on your windows. All that works great. The house was very comfortable the whole winter. No electric shocks! No more dry sinuses!

Hitachi CR13V 10 Amp Reciprocating Saw

Customer Review
I am redoing my basement and wanted an easy way to cut the old stud partitions. After looking and reading about all the reciprocating saws, I chose the CR13V. This saw did the job really well. The best part was that I didn't have to shell out mega bucks for a good saw. The only complaint I have is that it is a little heavy, but I did notice that when cutting the vibration was less than the Milwaukee I rented from the rental store before I bought the Hitachi CR13V. It comes with 1 blade, an Allen wrench along and the case. It could have come with more blades.
