How to Double Level of Relative Humidity in Your House

Low humidity level is most likely the cause of some pretty significant health issues. The optimal relative humidity level for human comfort and health is anywhere from 30% to 50%.
Here are some of the results of low humidity:

  • Severe static electricity resulting in powerful shocks
  • Furniture dries out and cracks, hardwood floor cracks and buckle
  • Severe dry, itchy, red, flaky skin and cracked lips
  • Dry hair, split ends
  • Dry, itchy eyes
  • Sinus irritation, bloody noses, and respiratory problems
  • Affects the human body’s ability to get oxygen and can cause headaches, migraines and lethargy
  • Affects pets with all of the above

Here is what one suffering from low level of humidity person writing:

“We are waking up at night with dry sinus, bloody nose, cracked lips and dry eyes. Have been sick for months and months with sinus infection and other sinus problems. This is a first as none of us are allergic to anything. An ENT doctor suggested the humidity in the house may be too low.”

So, if you are having the similar problems, what should you do? The answer is very simple – install a whole house humidifier! But what can you do if you have one already and it doesn’t keep up with the load? Well, just follow my example and install one more.

Now I anticipate a few questions:

  1. Can I install it myself or should I hire an HVAC company?
  2. What are the benefits of such installation?
  3. Is there any electrical work involved?
  4. Would it increase my water consumption?
  5. Would be it cost prohibitive?
  6. What type of the humidifier should I buy?
  7. Have more questions? Ask them on this page.

So, let my give you the answers to all these hypothetical questions:

  1. By following my simple step-by-step instructions you are definitely can install it by yourself. However, in order to install it you may need to purchase some additional tools and fittings and in order to avoid the spending you can hire an HVAC company.

  3. No.
  4. No. It will decrease water consumption, because your house will faster reach the set point of relative humidity and the humidistat will shut the solenoid valve off.
